Digital Strategy is your north star when it comes to running a business online
In recent years I’ve come to understand the importance of communication. When someone asks me, “What do you do?”. I wonder, how can I explain it in a way that they will understand? If this is the first time meeting this person, how will I know what they already know and don’t know? Great communication is the ability to convey message so effectively that it is understood by all people, at all levels. When it comes to technology, there’s really two types of business owners. There are those that embrace technology, they enjoy the time saving benefits that it brings to their life. Then there are the people that refer to a problem with their computer as a Gremlin.
The truth is, a digital strategy is exactly what both of these business owners are looking for. They just don’t know it yet.
Why Every Business Needs a Digital Strategy
There are so many benefits of having a strategy for how your business uses technology.
A digital strategy will help you:
- be competitive online
- improve customer service
- grow your customer base
- expand and grow your business
- improve quality control
- additional sales channel
It can also help you streamline your business by:
- freeing you up from process-driven activities
- improving redundancy as part of disaster recovery (flooding, pandemic)
- enabling 24/7 sales
- automating aspects of your staff induction and training
1. You don’t know what you don’t know
When my car breaks down I get a mechanic. When I have issues with electricity I get an electrician. When I’m not well I get a doctor. When you run a business a large part of that is having the right systems to achieve your desired outcomes. It’s always good to know as much as you can about everything that affects you, but you don’t know what you don’t know. As a digital strategy manager, I spend a lot of my time reading, using and developing software. I want to understand the impact, the functionality and the outcomes of using different types of digital systems. When I can fully understand all of those things I can see real world use cases where it will benefit my clients. When you pay an expert for their advice is not an expense, it’s an investment.
2. Order in the Chaos
There’s only two things you really need to know in business; the first is what you do. Master what you do, be as good as you possible can be. The second thing you should know is how to find someone to do everything else. A digital strategy will give you the tools to effectively manage your online presence, streamline your processes and give you some much needed order in all the chaos.
3. There’s always a better way
One of the hardest things about choosing to operate online is choosing the right tools. As software has eaten the world the list of options has grown very long. There’s about 40 or so email marketing tools that I’m aware of. They all have the same purpose but why choose one over the other? How does one know which is better? A Digital Strategy puts an end to the confusion. The tools that every business needs are packaged into a GWS Digital Partner plan. Everything you need to operate your business online is setup specifically for your business. As your Digital Partner we support and guide you along your journey online. When better tools become available we integrate them into your strategy. Technology changes very frequently and so does your business, your digital partner ensures the two stay in sync.
4. A digital strategy is right for every business
When I set myself to a task I like to really put all my effort into it. I think if you really want something then it’s worth the effort. When you choose to run a business, like it or not, you need to go where your customers are. All customers are online and so that’s where you need to be. If you’re going to do it, why not do it really well? A digital strategy is exactly the thing you need to successfully run your business online.
5. It’s not a “set and forget” kind of thing
The purpose of a digital strategy is to successfully run your business online. Why is your business online in the first place? For most it’s to tell people about what you do. From there, people can make contact or buy directly from you. Being online is a touch point. It’s a way to interact with your customers.
I want you to imagine a scenario where you go walking every day. You take the same route each time. Every time you go on one of these walks see a guy named John. John wears the exact same clothes, everyday. John always says the exact same thing to you every time you see him. In fact it’s so identical that even the tone of John’s voice doesn’t change. Sure seeing John wearing the same thing every time makes him easy to recognise. Hearing John say the same thing also makes you remember it. After a while of John only saying the same thing over and over again, in the exact same tone starts to get a little annoying. Actually come to think of it, John is a really unimpressive boring kind of person.
Then one day, you’re out on one of your walks and you see John. Only this time, John is wearing a new shirt. It’s similar to his old one except it just looks more modern. He’s also carrying a toolbox. All of a sudden your whole perception of John has changed. John only changed very slightly but those small changes make a big impact on other peoples perceptions.
A digital strategy will help you take aim at all the things that matter when operating your business online. However, a strategy is only effective if everything else remains unchanged. Unfortunately the economy and the world will never remain unchanged. The only constant is change.
Now you know
Those are the five things everyone should know about digital strategy. We work with many clients across many different industries. A lot of the same principles cross over operating online, the real difference comes down to the content you put out there. A digital strategy can give you all the tools to deliver your message online and connect you to your customers.
